This painting depicts a young Grass Dancer in his traditional regalia. The Grass Dancer began in the northern plains although now it is intertribal. The practical origin of the grass dance was for the purpose of preparing the ground for ceremony, tribal meetings, or to settle a new area. Scouts would stomp on the ground to flatten them and the grass dance grew from there.
