TWO RED ROADS

This painting depicts an old Cheyenne chief. On his head is a buffalo head dress and trailing down each side of his head are two red ribbons. The ribbons represent the two roads that natives were forced to walk as the white man came and placed them on reservations. One is their own red road of tradition and spirituality and the other is the path forced on them by the white man. They knew it was essential to their survival to conform but they never totally gave up their traditions despite the efforts of the U.S. government.
